Louisiana’s GATOR ESA is real money on paper — $5,243 to $15,253 per student in 2025–26 depending on income and disability tier — but it fails homeschoolers twice. First, by statute and BESE rule a student may not participate while in either home-study route: enrolling means giving up homeschool legal status and becoming a GATOR program student, educated through approved providers with state assessments. Second, the funding never matched the promise: about 5,600 funded seats against 39,000+ applicants in year one, and the 2026 legislature — after a $104 million revenue downgrade — removed the expansion and kept funding flat, adjourning June 8, 2026. Thousands of eligible families will be waitlisted again.
Louisiana did opt into the 2027 federal scholarship tax credit, whose homeschool-expense rules are still being written. Until something usable lands, the real Louisiana decision is between the two homeschool routes above — and that one’s about records, which is a solved problem.

Route 1 is the BESE-approved home study program: apply online within 15 days of starting (birth certificate attached), then renew each year by October 1 with one piece of evidence — a packet of subject outlines and work samples, a qualifying test score, or a certified teacher’s statement. Route 2 is registering as a nonpublic school not seeking approval: one annual online registration within 30 days of the session’s start, with no evidence ever. Each is fully legal; they differ in perks and paperwork.
Two statutory perks: it’s the route that preserves TOPS scholarship eligibility (the home-study criteria include at least two years in the program), and since Act 715 of 2024, BESE home-study students have the right to try out for athletics and extracurriculars at their zoned public school. The renewal packet is the price — and a year of organized records makes it a print job.
